Ganesha – An Art

Ganesha is the Hindu deity who is worshiped as the god of new beginnings, success, wisdom, and remover of obstacles. He is the son of Lord Shiva and Goddess Parvati. He is easily identified with his elephant head and human body.

Ganesha is a very popular figure in Indian art or we can say he is an art form in himself. Representations of ganesha show wide variations and distinct patterns changing over time. Have you ever noticed like his attributes his depiction is also versatile? You can easily find ganesha idols in gift shops depicting his modern and contemporary manifestation or avatar.

Ganesha may be portrayed standing, dancing, heroically taking action against demons, playing with his family as a boy, or sitting down on an elevated seat, or engaging in a range of contemporary situations. His body form makes it very easy for artists to mould him into any line drawing, abstract art, caricature, painting, sculpture and all other art forms present on earth.

All hindu rituals are incomplete without ganesha so, are the wedding cards. There won’t be any hindu home without any ganesha showpieces.

He is equally popular among foreigners. I still remember how my boss who hailed from US loved om and ganesha and wore them as pendants. Also, my reporting office in the other company was a french lady (now a dear friend) Monique, who is so much fond of India and ganesha that she asked me to decorate walls of our department in the office with beautiful ganesha paintings.
